Music

The practice of arts and music engages the imagination, fosters flexible ways of thinking, develops disciplined effort and builds self-confidence. At St Catherine’s, our cocurricular lessons take place in the Dame Joan Sutherland Centre for the Performing Arts, which has dedicated rehearsal rooms, practice studios, a band room, computer lab and recording studio as well as music practice and teaching areas.

Challenging oneself

St Catherine's employs professional tutors on woodwind, brass, percussion, strings, voice, guitar, piano and composition to enable more than 290 girls to learn an instrument at the School.

Students are able to take part in the vibrancy of our high-calibre music program and extend their abilities beyond the curriculum through cocurricular music lessons. External examinations are run through the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) and Trinity College London alongside internal School examinations.

Girls who select music as part of their senior or HSC curriculum subjects  study performance, composition, musicology and aural experiences. In 2013, two of our Music 1 candidates scored a perfect 100% in their final HSC examination and were both nominated for Encore, the program of outstanding HSC performances and compositions held annually at the Sydney Opera House.

A CHANCE TO PERFORM

St Catherine’s has more than 25 ensembles including orchestra, choir, bands, string ensembles and chamber ensembles. Our students are members of major youth ensembles including the Sydney Youth Orchestra and they have the chance to perform at major school events, civic and cultural events, musicals and overseas tours.

In 2014, more than 50 girls travelled to Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris and London, where they performed at the Arc de Triomphe, Easter events and the commemorations for ANZAC Day in London.

In December 2017, St Catherine’s will be touring to Italy, Slovenia and Austria with Cranbrook School, forming a combined choir, orchestra, band and strings. St Catherine’s also regularly combine with The Scots College to produce musicals at the Parade Theatre, NIDA.

Ensembles regularly compete in the Sydney Eisteddfod, NSW Band Festival, Yamaha Festival and Engadine Festival. Our senior orchestra, bands and strings ensembles have regularly achieved gold and silver awards for their performances.

european MUSIC TOUR

St Catherine’s 2014 European Music Tour was the largest and most ambitious musical tour in the school’s history. With over fifty girls from Years 7 to 12 involved, the tour gave them the opportunity to broaden their musical perspective, perform at some of the most iconic venues in the world and study under international conductors.
