ArtExpress and OnSTAGE nominations

Congratulations to Emily Wright, one of our prefects, for the nomination of her Body of Work for ArtExpress. This is a prestigious honour even if her work is not part of the final exhibition selection announced on Friday 20 November.

Her work referenced contemporary art practice and involved many hours of meticulous sewing on transparent silk which she layered with abstract drawings. The title of her work is Line as demarcation.

Her statement of her intent in its creation:
Line is the essential ingredient in drawing and sewing, adding depth, pattern, perspective, suggesting form and establishing viewpoint. Layering and light takes the traditional technique of cross hatching to a new dimension.

The Arts department received some fantastic news last Friday, Siobhan Downey’s Critical Analysis – The Director’s Folio has been retained by the BOSTES for inclusion in the OnSTAGE Exhibition.
This project requires the student to select one play from the text list, Siobhan chose Spring Awakening - a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics and a book by Steven Sater. It is based on the German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of teenage sexuality.
Once the student has selected their play, they must read it several times, create scene breakdown charts and brainstorm ideas around the play. They must then consider how each ‘Element of Drama’ would be used and how they would incorporate these into their performance.
They research ALL previous productions of the play and draft their own directorial concept/vision. In their portfolio they must include set designs, costume designs, lighting design and a rehearsal schedule, along with a statement about the intended experience for the audience.
This was a significant amount of work for Siobhan and it is so pleasing to see her hard work rewarded in such a prestigious way.
Another first for St Catherine’s, how exciting!!
