A European adventure

During the April holidays, Savannah Schonberger (Year 12), Amelia Pinter (Year 12) and myself travelled to Europe with the Sydney Youth Orchestra visiting Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Salzburg and Berlin. Highlights included a workshop with Tobias Lea, the Australian principal violist with the Vienna Philharmonic; performing in the renowned Haydn Hall; a workshop with Matthew McDonald, the Australian principal Double Bass with the Berlin Philharmonic; and playing in the Berlin Philharmonic's main hall, regarded as having one of the world's best acoustics.

Our final performance was in the Gethsemanekirche church where we combined with the Junges Ensemble Berlin forming an orchestra of around 200 people to perform 'Pictures at an exhibition'. Despite the intensity of the tour in terms of performing and rehearsing, we all returned home with a greater and more comprehensive understanding of music and an appreciation for different cultures and their passion for music.
