160 Year celebrations

‚ÄčThe St Catherine's school community marked its 160th birthday with a fashion-themed Foundation Day assembly on Tuesday, 1 March 2016. Mrs Lesley McGrath (OG 69) inspired the girls with an account of her journey from a St Catherine's school girl to a successful model and cover girl, encouraging them to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their goals.

Mrs McGrath used her first career as a platform to others, most notably managing a hotel overseas and her own event management company. The girls were fascinated by the range of experiences she shared with them; modelling assignments, learning German in Austria, mentoring young models and running large functions at world-famous events such as the Grand Prix.

Lesley emphasised her love for St Catherine's and its contribution to her personal development, advising students to make the most of every moment at school, to develop good friendships, communication skills, resilience and flexibility so they can take advantage of every opportunity that life brings, and manage the many challenges to come. Her address concluded to grateful applause, the audience appreciative of her valuable advice and exciting stories.

The 160 Year birthday party continued with a retrospective of the St Catherine's uniform, from the second half of the 1800s, when there was no uniform as we would recognise it, up to the stylish blue, red and gold ensembles of today. More than anything else in school life, the uniform represents both the internal history and the public pride of St Catherine's.

Students, dressed in uniforms from the last 85 years, participated in a fashion parade narrated by Mrs Evangeline Galettis. The parade was complemented by images of our uniforms from across the last 120 years. The enthusiastic modelling and the discovery of new facts about their school's fashion history made it a memorable presentation for the girls.

The assembly concluded with the traditional cutting of the cake by the Deputy Headmistress, Mrs Victoria Rennie, the youngest girl and the Head girl, with cupcakes promised to all students at lunchtime. Mrs McGrath's forward-looking words teamed with the fun showcase of St Catherine's girls of the past made it a fitting celebration of St Catherine's long history.

Foundation Day dinner with our overseas parents

A marvellous dinner was held in Shanghai on Tuesday celebrating our 160 year anniversary! Families travelled far and wide to attend and were delighted with the video messages we presented from their daughters!  We've set up a WeChat group to mirror our Facebook pages and look forward to keeping in regular touch with our international community.
