St Catherine’s has a reputation for excellence in music.
All St Catherine's girls study music. In Year 7 music is mandatory and after that, your daughter can select music as an elective right through to Year 12 for her HSC. Our cohorts for music study at HSC level are very strong and year after year our music students are recognised with honours for their achievements.
It is no secret the study of music
- engages the imagination
- fosters flexible ways of thinking
- develops disciplined effort
- builds self-confidence
- encourages collaboration
This is why we value it so highly at St Catherine's.
Learning an instrument
With music being part of the core curriculum from Kindergarten, over a quarter of our students opt for private tuition as part of our high-calibre music program extending their abilities beyond the curriculum in their chosen instrument. External examinations are run through the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) and Trinity College London alongside internal school examinations.
Private music tuition takes places in the Dame Joan Sutherland Centre for the Performing Arts, with dedicated rehearsal rooms, practice studios, band room, computer lab, recording studio and fully interactive teaching areas.
Join the band!
No matter what instrument your daughter plays, she can choose from more than 25 different ensembles at St Catherine's. Playing in an ensemble, she will perform at major school events, local and civic functions, on international tours, at our fabulous school musicals and in state and national eisteddfods.
International tours provide our girls with the opportunity to perform in some of the world's best venues, walk in the footsteps of the great composers, work with leading instrumentalists while representing our school and Australia. We join forces with one of our neighbouring boys' schools for the European tour which takes place every three years. Our most recent tour was in late 2017 with Cranbrook School and was truly memorable.
A special partnership with the ACO
Each year our students attend a strings workshop followed by a joint performance and special recital with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). In 2016, funded by our school Foundation, St Catherine's started work with the ACO in a unique Art and Music Education program for disadvantaged schools. Our students support the St Marys North Public School's burgeoning strings program. In turn, the children of St Marys North visit us at St Catherine's for immersive music sessions. Both schools gain much from this program and love the music connection and friendship.
